California Language Assistance Program (CA LAP)

California law requires health insurers to establish and support a language assistance program for certain California residents who have limited English proficiency. IAC’s CA LAP provides timely individual access to interpretation services at no cost to its limited English-proficient insureds.

Key CA LAP Requirements for Health Care Providers

  • Health care providers are required by law to provide interpretation services to their clients upon request.
  • Call IAC’s toll-free number, 1-888-524-3629, for information on free interpreter services by telephone in any language.
  • Discourage the use of family and friends, especially minors, as interpreters.
  • Document a patient’s refusal of interpreter services in his or her medical records.
